Question:

How can I get .NET installed for RMS?

Answer:

Installing .NET 3.5 for RMS Version 4.6 or Lower

In order to install the License Manager as a part of the RMS installation, you must have .NET version 3.5 installed on the machine.  If it is not installed you will receive an error at the end of the installation when you try to do the License Configuration.  Normally this would be a task best given to the local IT team, but occasionally you will have to work through this process yourself.

In this document we will discuss the two easiest ways to get the software installed.  Whether or not you can do the install process will depend on a couple of factors.  Number one, does your login account have the proper rights to install the software, and number two, is the software available to be installed on the machine.

The second factor will determine how the software can be installed on the machine.  The appropriate installation method will depend upon whether or not the software was included as part of the installed server image.  You really won't know if it is  available until you have succeeded or failed, but if you follow the first and then second ways to install the software on this document, it should compensate for either situation.

Server Manager

The following steps will allow you to install the software via the Server Manager tool on the server.  If at any point you receive an error saying you do not have permission to use this tool, you probably do not have a high enough permission level to install anything.  At that point you would need to go back to the IT department to request higher permissions.  Also, should you receive a message saying that the installation file could not be found, you will need to continue on to the second installation method PowerShell.  The Server Manager steps are:

  • Open Server Manager on the server
  • Click Manage at the top right hand side of the window
  • Click the Add Roles and Features link, the Add Roles and Feature Wizard will open in a new window
  • Click Next on the Before you Begin page of the installer window
  • Select the "Role-based or feature-based installation" option on the Installation Type page
  • Click Next
  • On the next page, ensure that the server you are installing on is selected from the list of servers in the Server Pool
  • Click Next until you arrive at the Features page
  • Select the ".NET Framework 3.5 Features" from the list of Features
  • Click Next
  • Click Install

At this point the installation should commence, and once it is done, you should be able to finish your RMS installation.

PowerShell

The PowerShell installation has fewer steps than the Server Manager installation, but it also has an additional caveat.  In order to do the installation you must be able to run PowerShell as an administrator and the server must either be able to connect to the Internet or a local DISM server.  Here are the steps for the installation:

  1. Open up PowerShell as an administrator
  2. Enter in the following command: "DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All" (do not include the quotation marks)
  3. Press Enter

At this point the installation should commence, and once it is done, you should be able to finish your RMS installation.
