Summary:
Customers reported back in October 2023 that MAC Ultra fixtures running firmware 2.1.0 exhibited tilt step loss and increased mechanical noise when operating in Fast Tilt mode. The issue occurred when the fixture was commanded to perform rapid tilt movements with sudden direction changes before reaching the end of travel. Investigation determined that the increased tilt speed in firmware 2.1.0 exceeded the practical limits of the tilt motor system, resulting in missed motor steps and belt noise.
Troubleshooting:
Firmware version 2.1.0 increased the tilt speed in Fast Mode beyond what the tilt motor and drive system could reliably sustain during aggressive direction changes. Under these conditions, the tilt axis could lose motor steps, resulting in audible belt noise and positioning inaccuracies. Engineering modified the tilt motion parameters to reduce the maximum tilt speed in Fast Mode to a level that maintains reliable motor operation while preserving fixture performance. The updated behavior aligns with the stable performance previously observed in firmware 2.0.3.
Upgrade affected fixtures to firmware 2.1.3 (released in July, 2024.) or later to prevent tilt step loss and excessive noise during high-speed tilt movements.
