How to Setup the P3 System Controller With DMX and P3 Control

Video Manual Series

Written by Ernesto Hernandez

Updated at January 28th, 2026

This video will show you how to configure your P3 system with a DMX controller.  In this configuration you will be controlling the P3 controller and not the actual fixtures.  You must have a video playing in your media server through the P3 Processor in order to change the color output through your DMX controller.  You will not be able to control the fixtures individually through your DMX controller with this setup, you are only controlling the P3 Processor.

Transcript
today we are going to add DMX control
over our P3 system if you need help
setting up your P3 please watch one of
our other
videos in order to do this we'll need an
already set up P3 system as well as a
DMX
controller for our connections we're
going to Simply connect the DMX
controller to our P3 via 5pin DMX or
artnet we can see that we have a setup
P3 that's already mapping
video we're going to go to the DMX and
motion
tab here on the left we can see we have
all of our configured devices and on the
right our patching table we want to make
sure we're on light controls Tab and not
on the motion controls
tab first we're going to patch Global
control over the processor
itself highlight the P3 System
Controller and select add controls whe
only have one option here which is
global we're going to select next I'm
going to be using
artet and we're going to select the
start address as one and select
next finally select create
controls we have just added a 4channel
fixture for Global control of the
P3 Channel One allows for blackout and
freeze functionalities as well as
calling a up test patterns which may
come in handy later channel two allows
for calling up presets and channels 3
and four are 16bit control of color
temperature
correction next we're going to add
control for our skeptron
highlight all of the skeptron
and select add
controls we have three options here
intensity RGB and
basic we'll choose basic Bic basic is a
five channel fixture per skeptron which
features 16bit intensity and RGB control
we're going to select next and we have
two options consecutive Channel or the
same
channel consecutive channels will give
us individual control of our skeptron
where same channel we'll put both of our
skeptron on the same channel we are
going to select consecutive channels
I'm going to select
artet and I want my addresses to start
after our last used channel so I'll type
in
five and select next and finally we
click create
controls now that we've created the
controls we can see them here on our
patch
table and our fixtures just went black
as we don't have the console set up for
control yet yet but a quick way to make
sure our system is still working
properly is to click the disable all
controls button at the top of the screen
and we see our video comes back to life
be careful to not click the delete all
controls button or we're going to have
to reatch our system once we have
everything set up we can use DMX control
to override the video mapping being sent
to our
units I'll start by turning the
intensity all the way up
and now with P3 Global control I can
change my color
temperature we can go warmer or much
cooler or sit somewhere in the
middle and for my fixtures I can
individually have control over each
color
channel the video is still playing
through but I've changed the RGB values
for each
fixture I can also change all fixtures
to red blue or green while the original
mapped video is still playing through
please note that we do not have
individual control of each pixel in our
fixtures only the fixtures as a
whole the system is now ready to run
video and override that with DMX
control but if you do not have any video
running into the P3 processor we'll
simulate this by selecting a video input
that we do not have
connected without video the fixtures
essentially see nothing coming in so no
matter what we do none of the colors
will come
through here's where the test patterns
can help us out I can call up the white
test pattern with my P3 Global
control there we go now that our
fixtures are white I can use DMX control
override to change the colors of each
fixture and that's it our processor is
ready for DMX overide
